Test guide

AAS Scholarship Tests

Some schools use Academic Assessment Services (AAS) for scholarship testing. What the tests contain, how timing works, how dates are set and how to prepare.

What the tests contain

AAS describes four subjects:

  • Writing — a long-form written response, usually 25 to 30 minutes
  • Reading comprehension — multiple choice
  • Mathematics — multiple choice
  • Reasoning — multiple choice

Multiple-choice questions have four or five possible answers. AAS says each scholarship exam is 40 to 50 minutes long and runs as two test sessions with a 20-minute break in between. Schools choose whether students sit the test on paper or online.

Time per question

AAS does not publish how many questions each test has, so we cannot honestly give a time per question. Ask the school how the sessions are timed for your child’s year.

Try a sample question

An original question in the style of a Reasoning test. It is not a real test item.

3 notebooks weigh the same as 5 pens. Each pen weighs 12 g. How much do 2 notebooks weigh?

  2. B. 24 g
  3. C. 36 g
  4. D. 40 g
  5. E. 60 g
Show the concept and worked answer

Concept: things that balance have equal totals. Find the total, then share it out to find one item.

  1. 5 pens weigh 5 × 12 = 60 g, so 3 notebooks weigh 60 g.
  2. One notebook weighs 60 ÷ 3 = 20 g.
  3. 2 notebooks weigh 2 × 20 = 40 g.

Answer: D, 40 g
